The Open Door Church of God in Christ-Detroit was founded by Elder Alan Ross Evans in December 1991 with his beautiful and faithful wife by his side, Missionary Shernetta Evans. Together, this God sent and anointed couple has four beautiful children, Alan II, Sherlana, Brandi and Rhonda. The Open Door Church originally started off with less that six families and was previously located at 17140 Hayes between Seymour and Spring Garden. This place consisted of four walls, one bathroom, a tiny hallway and two small rooms, which became the Pastor's study and the fellowship hall. But, thank God for the humble beginnings. The Lord gave Pastor Evans the church name, Open Door, from Revelation 4:1 which reads:
The Lord also imparted in to Pastor Evans' spirit Genesis 12:1-3, which reads:
Elder Alan Ross Evans was saved under the pastorate of Pastor James Maclin Sr., who is the pastor of New Maclin Temple Church of God in Christ. After serving many, many years under the leadership of Pastor Maclin, the Lord in His infinite wisdom called Elder Evans out from his father's house into a land that he would show him. It must be noted that while serving under Pastor Maclin, Elder Evans was faithful and diligent in the responsibilities assigned to him by the pastor. The following titles and positions are just a few responsibilities that Pastor Evans held:
The Lord has truly blessed and added to the Open Door such as should be saved. As the church began to experience growth, the church was in desperate need of a larger and more adequate facility. The Lord heard their prayers and rewarded the church's faithfulness by supplying their need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. The Lord moved upon Pastor Evans to establish a Building Fund Sunday. The 4th Sunday of every month was designated and appointed to be Building Fund Sunday. Building Fund Sunday still exists, today. In less than three years the church raised $50,000 along with tithes and offerings. After much prayer and seeking the Lord for a larger facility, the Lord led Pastor Evans to 14900 E. Seven Mile Road.
